Court of
Master
Sommeliers
Build beverage knowledge, sharpen your palate, and bring it all together through thoughtful hospitality. The Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas pathway progresses through Introductory, Certified, Advanced, and Master Sommelier. Use this guide to explore the official resources for your next step; CMS and WSET are separate qualification pathways.
-
Start with the official resources for the exam you are preparing to take. Build your knowledge of regions, grapes, production, beverage styles, and service, then connect what you learn to the wines in your glass and the guests at your table. Study theory, tasting, hospitality, and beverage business skills together.
-
Follow Introductory, Certified, Advanced, and Master Sommelier in sequence, passing theory first at Advanced and Master. Introductory requires 60% on a 70-question multiple-choice exam; Certified requires 60% in each of its three sections at one sitting. Advanced requires 60% in each section within one calendar year, while Master requires 75% in each section within the theory-pass year and the following two calendar years. Check the current eligibility, format, and registration instructions before booking.
-
Practice with other learners, share your reasoning, and seek feedback from experienced sommeliers. CMS-A offers Certified exam study sessions and virtual office hours for CMS students, covering preparation, tasting, service, business, and career questions. This is an independent Sip Studies guide. Official resources checked 4 October 2026; confirm current requirements with CMS Americas.
